About the Item

William Woollett (1735–1785) William Woollett was one of the most accomplished British engravers of the 18th century, renowned for his precision and his ability to capture the painterly subtleties of light and atmosphere. Born in Maidstone, Kent, he studied under John Tinney in London and became widely recognized for his engravings after major British and continental artists. His most celebrated works include The Death of General Wolfe (after Benjamin West) and several landscapes after Richard Wilson and Claude Lorrain. Elected an Associate Engraver of the Royal Academy in 1775, Woollett elevated engraving to the level of fine art through his fusion of line engraving and etching. His work is characterized by technical mastery, tonal depth, and a poetic sensitivity to nature — qualities that made him one of the leading figures of the “golden age” of British printmaking. George Stubbs (1724–1806) George Stubbs is regarded as one of Britain’s greatest animal painters, famed for his scientific accuracy, compositional grace, and emotional understanding of his subjects. Born in Liverpool, he studied anatomy extensively and published The Anatomy of the Horse (1766), a landmark in both art and veterinary science. Stubbs combined empirical observation with an artist’s sensitivity, transforming animal painting into a noble and intellectual genre. While best known for his equestrian portraits, he also painted scenes of rural sports and domestic life, depicting animals and people in harmonious relationship with their environment. His collaborations with engravers such as William Woollett ensured that his images reached a wide audience, securing his reputation as both a naturalist and an artist of refinement and depth.
