About the Item
This charming and mischievous circa 1910 original lithography by Francisque Poulbot captures a moment of youthful rebellion and streetwise spirit in the heart of working-class Paris. Titled Nany et Lona – La Danse des Fortifs, the artwork is a lively portrayal of childhood antics played out against the backdrop of the infamous “fortifs,” the now-vanished fortification belt that once encircled the city.
Poulbot, known for his poignant and humorous depictions of Parisian street children, delivers here a scene filled with humor and vitality. A young ragamuffin boy, dressed in patched clothes and scuffed shoes, performs an exaggerated kick behind an oblivious or perhaps equally cheeky girl, who struts ahead with confident flair and exaggerated elegance. Their exaggerated postures and expressive faces recall the comédie humaine of the Belle Époque’s street life, filtered through the artist’s tender and satirical eye.
Set in muted earth tones and with an almost theatrical backdrop of barren trees and cobbled streets, the composition emphasizes character over place. The dance they perform is not one of elegance or refinement but of play, mockery, and survival — a child’s parody of adult behavior and social norms.
This lithograph is more than a whimsical illustration. It is a window into the lives of the gamins de Paris, children who inhabited the margins yet inspired some of the most beloved visual art of early 20th-century France. Poulbot’s legacy as a visual chronicler of these overlooked figures lives on vividly in works like this, filled with both satire and affection.

Francisque Poulbot
Francisque Poulbot was a French affichiste, draughtsman and illustrator. Born into a teaching family – his parents were both lecturers – Poulbot was the eldest of seven children. He was a gifted draughtsman, but shied away from the École des Beaux-Arts. From 1900, his drawings started to be published in the press. He moved to Montmartre, and in February 1914 married Léona Ondernard, before leaving for the front. He was however sent back the following year. During World War I, he drew patriotic posters and postcards, for which he was put under house arrest under the German occupation of France during World War II. In 1920–1921, being very attached to the Montmartre life, Poulbot became involved in creating the République de Montmartre, with his friends Adolphe Willette, Jean-Louis Forain and Maurice Neumont. In 1923 he opened a dispensary on the Rue Lepic to help the needy children of Montmartre. He died in Paris on 16 September 1946 and was buried in Montmartre Cemetery.

It is apparent Behmer is influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley, though this work is no less beautiful in its execution. Little is known regarding his connections to Oscar Wilde though he is obviously an admirer and has many similarities with his private life and incarceration in prison. These works were a personal gift to Baron Detlev von Hadeln, the aristocrat and prominent art historian of the age.
Behmer is known to be, since 1903, a member in the first ever homosexual organization in Berlin and was thus probably a part of Adolf Brand’s circle, and may have contributed to Brand’s publication Der Eigene. Until now, few know that Behmer was sentenced in April 1937 by a court in Konstanz to imprisonment for two years, being arrested in Freiburg and at other locations in southern Germany for being a homosexual.
