Moody Vintage Print - TV with Two Figures style of Edward Hopper

1994

About the Item

Moody Vintage Print - TV with Two Figures style of Edward Hopper Print of an interior scene with a tv stand, side table, lamp, and lifting weights. The tv screen reflects the tops of two figures in the otherwise still and empty room. The lighting in the room is dark and slightly eerie, contrasted primarily by the white background of the tv screen. The mark making on this print provides a softness and atmosphere to the piece, appearing at first like a charcoal or deep graphite drawing. The boxy tv in the center and the slatted curtains behind it cement this piece in the 1990s and add a now nostalgic air to the composition. Along the bottom of the print, in faint graphite, is written "A/P TV" "Darien Payne" on the right side, indicating that this copy is the Artist Proof copy. Signed and dated "Darien Payne 1994." Darien Payne (American, b. 1951) is an artist and printmaker from Santa Cruz, CA. She is primarily known for small scale, finely detailed watercolors, often with everyday scenes as the subject. Member, California Society of Printmakers Exhibitions and Publications: 2020 – “The Ripple Effect” – Monterey Museum of Art, Monterey, CA 2008 – “Around the Kitchen Table” – Museum of Art and History, Santa Cruz, CA 1997 – Quarry West Magazine, 33rd Issue, Santa Cruz, CA 1993 – “Currents” - Art Museum of Santa Cruz County, Santa Cruz, CA 1992 – “Works From Home” - Smith Gallery, Sana Cruz, CA 1991 – “Contemporary Printmaking Invitational” – Janet Turner Print Gallery, Chico, CA 1991 – Victoria Cameron Gallery, San Francisco, CA 1991 – Biennial Juried Exhibition – Monterey Museum, Monterey, CA 1987 – Stevenson College Library, UCSC, Santa Cruz, CA 1985 – Lawson Gallery, Palo Alto, CA

Mat size: 19"H x 13"W Paper size: 14.5"H x 10"W Commentary on the triptych: In the Edo period, Tanabata was designated as one of the five seasonal festivals, and became an annual event for the imperial court, aristocrats, and samurai families, and gradually came to be celebrated by the general public. Its origins are said to be a combination of the Kikoden festival, which originated from the Chinese legend of Altair and the Weaver Girl, and Japan's ancient Tanabata women's faith. Ink is ground with dew that has accumulated on potato leaves, poems and wishes are written on five colored strips of paper, which are then hung on bamboo branches to celebrate the two stars that meet once a year. Although the illustration is a Genji painting...
