About the Item

"Le café de la Nouvelle Athènes" French Impressionist Etching Etching of the bustling Café de la Nouvelle Athènes by Jean-Louis Forain (French b. 1852 d. 1931.) A row of men in top hats sit against the wall, the man in the foreground is reading a newspaper. Across from the men, a woman has her back turned to the viewer as she walks towards a waiter. More figures rendered with simple linework are seen in the background, as well as top hats and coats hanging on hooks. The etching features direct and lively linework, the marks capturing the essence of fabric folds and hair without over-specificity. This creates a small but energetic piece which captures the feeling of a crowded cafe. Hand-signed on plate, "Forain," along bottom edge. Frame size: 15.5" H x 13.68" W Mat size: 12" H x 10" W Plate size: 6.25" H x 4.75" W Jean-Louis Forain was born in Reims, France in 1852 and was raised in Paris after his family relocated there when he was eight years old. He entered the art world as a caricaturist, creating art for Parisian journals such as Le Monde Parisien and Le Rire Satirique. He later enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, with the goal of expanding his artistic practice. There he studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme, an academic painter, and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, a baroque-style sculptor. Forain made a name for himself participating in debates held by Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas at the Café de la Nouvelle Athènes, and following this began to participate in major Impressionist exhibitions alongside Degas and others. While Forain was inspired by the handling of color and light by the impressionists, his artwork was more often focused on aspects of modern city life, such as cafes and other popular entertainment venues. Forain also continued to create drawings and prints with social and political commentary, publishing La Comédie Parisienne 1892 and creating numerous patriotic illustrations during the first World War. In 1931, Forain was made a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, an indicator of his great success. His work is now held in numerous collections around the world, such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée d'Orsay, and the British Museum.
