Johann Theodor De Bry
CCXL. Red Lily

1611

About the Item

JOHANN THEODOR DE BRY (1561-1623) Florilegium Novum. Oppenhiem, 1611. Hand-coloured engravings. Inspired by Vallet, Besler and Van de Pass, DeBry's Florilegium Novum remains one of the most successful seventeenth century endeavors. DeBry headed what was to become perhaps the greatest, if not the most influential, family of horticultural illustrators ever. There are more than one-half dozen works bearing his name. Quite an accomplishment! His son-in-law, Matthaus Merian revised many of DeBry's earlier works, sometimes printing them in larger paper sized editions. Merian also produced works of significance. Perhaps the best know member of this horticultural dynasty is Maria Sibylla Merian, DrBry's granddaughter, who was to pioneer the woman's role in botanical illustration. Each of these fine German's has earned an honoured place in the most reputable collections and institutions of international standing.
