André Dutertre
'Description De L'Égypte' Engraving of Tomb & Statue of Ramses II (Ozymandias)

This large engraving, entitled "Vue de péristyle du tombeau et de débris de la statue colossale d'Osymandyas, prise de l'ouest", created by French artist André Dutertre (1753-1842), is plate 25 from the work 'Description de l'Égypte, ou Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont été faites en Égypte pendant l'expédition de l'armée française' (Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and researches which were made in Egypt during the expedition of the French Army). This gigantic work was published as a series from 1809 to 1829. It was ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte during the Egyptian campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars, from 1798-1801 at the beginning of France's colonization of Egypt. The work aimed to catalogue all known aspects of ancient Egypt in the time of the pharaohs, as well as modern Egyptian natural history. Many scientists, scholars and artists who accompanied the campaign, produced the initial scenes and descriptions, while around 160 academics and around 2,000 artists, including 400 engravers, contributed to the final publication. This masterpiece, consisting of 13 volumes containing 892 engravings, marked the birth of the field of Egyptology. This engraving depicts the festival court of the Ramesseum, the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramses II. It was called by the ancient Egyptians "The Temple of Millions of Years United with Thebes". 19th century tourists referred to the temple as the Tomb of Ozymandias and as the Memnonium with the Ozymandias Colossus, the toppled torso of the seated Ramses II, carved in red granite is shown on the right of the scene. In antiquity, Ozymandias was a Greek name for Ramses II. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) wrote a poem about the ruins entitled "Ozymandias". Two Egyptian men rest nearby on the ground with their camels and weapons. The engraving is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a bronze center cove and a double mat; the outer silk mat is beige-colored and the inner mat is bronze-colored. The frame measures: 35.88" x 45.32" x 2.13". There is some waving of the paper, a short linear area of discoloration in the upper right and occasional small faint spots in the lower margin and the upper print. The print is otherwise in very good condition.
