About the Item
In No Thru Traffic, master printmaker Art Werger offers a striking aerial view of an archetypal suburban neighborhood, rendered with his characteristic precision and subtle wit. Curving cul-de-sacs and looping roads form an almost abstract pattern, their orderly geometry contrasted with the organic shapes of lawns and tree shadows. Houses with teal roofs punctuate the composition, creating a rhythmic visual map of modern domestic planning.
Werger’s use of color etching and aquatint imbues the work with depth and texture, while the elevated perspective recalls both cartographic drawings and the dispassionate lens of aerial photography. The title adds a layer of commentary, hinting at themes of isolation, control, and the sometimes-closed nature of suburban life.

This print was created using a technique called "double-drop" in which a single plate is inked and printed twice - first with warm colors and then on top of itself with cool colors. Edition pf 10.
Werger has received over 250 awards in national and international exhibitions. In 2015 he recieved the Guanlan International Printmaking Prize at the Guanlan Biennial in China, followed by the Grand Prize at the Ekaterinburg mezzotint festival in Russia. In 2012 he received the Award of the Rector at the International Print Triennial in Krakow, Poland and the Prize for Full Correspondence between technique and Imagery at the First International Mezzotint Festival in Ekaterinburg, Russia. He currently teaches printmaking at Ohio University, in Athens Ohio. Previously he served at the Chairman of the fine Arts division, and as professor of Art, at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.

Art Werger
Art Werger was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, in 1955. He received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, in 1978 and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Wisconsin, in 1982. From 1982 to 2000, he was a professor of art at Wesleyan College, in Macon, Georgia. Since 2000, he has been the director of foundations and professor of printmaking at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio. Werger’s impressive, intense prints invite audiences to assume new perspectives and consider the unfolding scene, as though they were casual bystanders. He encourages viewers to develop their interpretations of the action. Werger thrives on dealing with the technical complexities of print media. He most often uses mezzotint, a type of intaglio printmaking, where the artist works from dark to light. Werger carefully refines his images to reflect the precision of this process. His prints have received many awards and have been displayed in numerous international and national exhibitions. They are included in corporate and museum collections, such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Boston Public Library, Brooklyn Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
