Bernard Buffet, once said to be Picasso’s successor, declined in popularity as French art pundits’ interested shifted away from figurative art. Twenty years after the artist’s death, Buffet’s work is undergoing a well-deserved resurgence as support for bold, graphic style is at an all-time high. Buffet, known for his emaciated figures and crude still-lives, dedicated much time and effort documenting France.
Signed lithograph by French painter and printmaker Bernard Buffet (1928-1999) depicting a portrait of two clowns, one playing guitar. This print is signed V. Beffa, an alias used by Buffet. Buffet was a prolific artist of more than 8,000 paintings, watercolors, drawings, lithographs and engravings, his style characterized by use of harsh black lines and a muted color palette of grey, black, brown, and green. He achieved recognition early in his career with his first solo exhibition at the age of 19, and achieved his first award at 20, the Prix de la critique at the Galerie Saint-Placide in Paris. He continued to exhibit regularly and had his first retrospective at the age of 30. Honors included receiving first place on Connaissance magazine's list of 10 best post-war artists in 1955 as well as being receiving a Legion of Honor award in 1973.
