About the Item

Chromolithograph after Peter de Pannemaeker, from L’Illustration Horticole: Revue Mensuelle Des Plantes Les Plus Remarquables [Horticulture Illustrated: The Monthly Journal of the Most Remarkable Plants]. Published by Jean Jules Linden (1817-1898) and Lucien Linden (1853-1940). Edited by Emile Rodigas. Lithography by P. de Pannemaeker. Printed by Eug. Vanderhaeghen, Rue des Champs, Ghent, Belgium, 1887-93. L’Illustration Horitcole was a collaborative effort of the great horticulturists and field botanists of the day. The series encompasses full-page chromolithographs together with discussions of horticultural history, and accounts of the major expositions and scholarly works. Many of the flowers are arranged as decorative bouquets, while others are shown growing in their natural habitat. Jean Jules Linden was an influential horticulturist and publisher, especially in the realm of orchids. He was founder, with his son Lucien, of the nursery Horticulture Internationale in Brussels, where he imported new plants including over 1,100 orchid species, as well as known for his publication Lindenia: Iconographe des Orchidees, from 1885-1903. Peter de Pannemaeker was a prolific watercolor artist and printmaker in 19th century Ghent when Belgium was the leading center for botanical publishing. Specializing in landscapes and botanicals, Pannemaeker contributed as many as 3000 illustrations to botanical books and periodicals, including the art and chromolithography for Jean Jules Linden’s publications L’Illustration Horticole and Lindenia. L’Illustration Horticole underwent changes in name and editors over the years. These prints are from a larger folio size published during a brief period in the late 1880s to early 1890s. Each print come with accompanying descriptive text.
