Brendan Neiland (b. 1941) York Railway Station Original Vintage Poster 102x64cm Born in Stafford in 1941, Brendan Neiland is a renowned contemporary painter and printmaker with work exhibited in The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery London, The Collections of the British Council and the Arts Council of Great Britain. Neiland's work often explores intricate patterns of light and reflection, creating beauty from the glass panes of city towers and pools of water. In this regard he has often been likened to Georges Braque and Johannes Vermeer. In addition to the many awards, Neiland has been Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, appointed Professor of Painting at the University of Brighton as well as the Loughborough University. His work is spread internationally, and can be found in public and private collections. In 1991 Neiland was commissioned by InterCity to create a series of five posters in honour of the electrification of the East Coast Main Line and consequent introduction of the IC225 fleet of electric trains. His unique combination of realism, reflections and cityscapes allowed the creation of glamorous posters with the station buildings reflected in train windows, the composition held together with electric cables which give a powerful structure to the paintings. The following year the King’s Cross poster was brought to life by Saatchi & Saatchi in their television commercial Welcome to InterCity. Neiland also produced posters for the new InterCity line to the West Country and also for the Highland Lines for Scotrail.
