Byron Randall"Oak Tree Sonoma" Expressionist Black & White Wood Block by Byron Randall

About the Item
This strong image of a tree in Sonoma is a wood block by Byron Randal.
A predominantly figurative artist, Randall experimented with abstraction in the 1940s, and again in the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout his career, he produced still-life, portraits, nudes, and landscapes, in oil, watercolor, gouache, pastel, and print. He also developed plaster sculptures and three-dimensional collages on the theme of the sea (a recurrent interest). Randall's concern for social justice ran throughout his career. It was most explicit in art from the 30s through to the 50s, such as his 1947 'Diabolical Machines' print (held in numerous museums), his Spanish Civil War painting (at Hallie Ford Museum), and his prints of dispossessed Jews from the ghettos of Eastern Europe (at LA Museum of the Holocaust), created from firsthand observation.
Randall's art revels in the joyful, sensuous, and whimsical aspects of everyday life. It celebrates both male and female nudity, and the hedonistic satisfactions of leisure: surfing, drinking, dancing, lounging, and making music. From early on, Randall's love of tools was featured in his work, animating his popular 'Philo' oil series of West Coast barns, plows, and shovels. Tools and vessels often make their way into his still-life, as do nudes, who are often slyly incorporated into landscapes and still lives. Randall saw in manual labor the affirmative potential of a non-industrialized life. This led him to unsentimental, international portraits, in paint and print, of working people, as hewers of coal and wood, house painters, diggers, laundry women, cooks, carpenters, farmhands, stevedores, sellers of bread, balloons, and chickens.
Randall was an expressionist whose art was strongly responsive to the physical environment. Of his paintings, he wrote: "the look of them might have been different if I'd grown up anywhere but in Oregon. Brilliant sunlight nursing the green valleys after a long rainy winter . . . there's a powerful bit of environment that would show in a man's work all his life. I've seen that creative communication has vitality all its own. It's not a refuge from life, but an intensification. It's the practice of humanity. In painting, I think the approach that best affirms life is expressionism, and that's why I became and am now an expressionist.

The method of artistic execution — whether it was charcoal, pencil, crayon, etcher’s burin, lithographic tusche or paper cut — varied according to the subject and personal circumstance. His favorite subjects were evocative or erotic — the female form, the nude figure or a beautiful head of a favorite model. Other themes relate to the real or imagined world of both Oceania and the Caribbean — the lagoons, the coral and the faces of beautiful women from these far-off lands. Matisse worked in various mediums simultaneously—sometimes setting one aside for years, taking it up again when a particular technique offered the possibility of a desired result. Matisse’s etchings...Category

$1,400 / set - Drawing StudyLocated in Palm Desert, CAA drawing by James Rosenquist. "Drawing Study" is an abstract drawing, oil pastel and pencil on paper by Blue Chip American artist James Rosenquist. The artwork is signed in the lower right, "James Rosenquist 1966" and has been given the authentication number 66.D05. A leader of 1960’s pop art, James Rosenquist was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota in 1933. After his family moved to Minneapolis, he studied art at both the Minneapolis School of Art and the University of Minnesota. Upon receiving a scholarship to the Art Students League in 1955, Rosenquist moved to New York City. Although he left the school after only a year, he painted billboards across the city before renting a studio space in Manhattan in 1960 where he developed his own artistic career. Rosenquist had his first solo show at the Green Gallery in New York in 1962 and achieved international acclaim with his room-scale painting, F-111 in 1965. Subsequently, Rosenquist has been honored throughout his extensive career. In 1978, he was appointed to a six-year term on the Board of the National Council of the Arts. More recently in 2002, he was given the Fundacion Cristobal Gabarron’s annual international award for art in recognition of his contributions to universal culture. Rosenquist’s work continues to evolve and influence contemporary artists. Rosenquist’s billboard painting served as the basis for his visual language, often adapted from advertising and pop culture. His work demonstrates a clear interest in deliberate color, line, and shape. However much of his work fragments and overlaps disproportionate images to abstract banal objects such as laundry...Category
