About the Item

Old Battersea Bridge View, Chelsea, 1879 - Etching on Paper Black and white 1897 etching titled "Old Battersea Bridge View" by Charles John Watson (British, 1846-1947). View at Chelsea from the bank of the Thames, with boats moored in foreground at left, Old Battersea Bridge in background, and Chelsea Old Church beyond. Signed and dated "Charles J Watson 1879" "Chelsea" lower left. Presented in a black mat. Mat: 16"H x 20"W Paper: 11"H x 14"W Image: 6 3/4"H x 10 3/4"L Charles John Watson was born in Norwich, Norfolk in 1846. Watsons parents owned a small print selling business, with his dad working as a carver and gilder. From a young age, Charles began learning printmaking, painting and etching and soon began exhibiting his paintings and etchings in galleries around London. These included the Royal Academy, the Society of British Artists, the Institute of Painters in Water Colors and, most significantly, the Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Watson was one of the earliest fellows of the Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, joining after the ‘Allcomers’ exhibition in spring 1881, and exhibiting a considerable number of etchings between then and 1920, with increasing artistic success. (The society gained its Royal Charter in 1888.) While establishing himself with scenes of Norfolk, he soon widened his repertoire. In 1885, Watson helped found the Norwich Art Circle, with Edward Elliott and Robert Bagge-Scott, and became its first president. Other early members included Minna Bolingbroke, his junior by 10 years, who would later become his wife. Despite his strong affiliations to Norfolk, and to Norwich in particular, including his knowledge of the history of local artists, he moved to London in 1888. Settling in Chelsea, he took a studio at 5 Wentworth Studios, Manresa Road, and produced work for a series of shows at Robert Dunthorne’s Gallery in Vigo Street, often inspired by his travels in France, Holland and Italy (including Venice and Sicily). He also became a member of the Hogarth Club, in Dover Street. By 1893, he had sufficiently raised his profile that he won a medal at Chicago’s International Exhibition. His work is represented in numerous public collections, including the V&A; and the Castle Museum (Norwich).

Late 19th Century Boats at San Francisco Port Seascape Drawing
By Raymond Dabb Yelland
Located in Soquel, CA
San Francisco moorings, a late 19th century double-sided pencil sketch by Raymond Dabb Yelland (American, 1848 - 1900), 1987. Signed "R.D. Yelland" lower right. Dated "87" lower left. Drawing on both sides of paper. Wood frame. Image size, 8.5"H x 12"L. A master marine painter, Yelland painted in Gloucester Harbor. He sailed to San Francisco in 1874 to take a teaching position in art at Mills College in Oakland. From 1877 to 1894, he taught at the California School of Design. He was a decisive influence on a younger generation of California artists. Full Bio: Raymond Dabb Yelland was born in London, England on February 2, 1848. At the age of three, he immigrated with his family to New York City where he was raised and attended public schools. By the age of twelve, he had settled on art as a career. He was born as Raymond Dabb, but due to the negative connotation of his name, his mother's maiden name, Yelland, was added. After serving under Sheridan in the Federal Army during the Civil War, Yelland attended Pennington Seminary in New Jersey. He studied art at the National Academy of Design from 1869 to 1871 with Page and Brevoort, and then taught at the Academy for one year. With his new bride, he sailed around the Horn in 1874 to San Francisco where he would assume the position of an art instructor at Mills College in Oakland. In 1877, he traveled to England, and later continued his studies in Paris with Luc Oliver Merson. Upon his return to California, Yelland became assistant director of the San Francisco School of Design, and in 1888, assumed its directorship. While at that school, he also taught at the University of California, Berkeley, for many years. His many pupils included Homer Davenport, Alexander Harrison...

"West Point from the East Bank of the Hudson" Antique Drawing on Paper Watkinson
Located in Soquel, CA
"West Point from the East Bank of the Hudson" Antique Drawing on Paper Delicate and detailed drawing by Hartford, Connecticut artist Edward Watkins Wells (1819-1898) The viewer looks out past a gate at the Hudson River, with its characteristic mountain banks. A shepherd is driving a flock of sheep towards the gate and viewer. The scene appears to have been copied from a drawing book published in 1827, based on the inscription at the bottom edge. Presented in white archival mat Mat size: 12"H x 12"W Paper size: 7.5"H x 9.25"W Notes of interest on Edward Watkinson Wells Our most significant acquisition this year came from a dealer in Philadelphia. It is a 450-page diary written over 10 years (1841-1851) by Hartford artist and dilettante Edward Watkinson Wells (1819-1898), one of the many nephews of our founder, David Watkinson (1778-1857). Edward was immersed in Hartford’s cultural life in the 1840s, exhibited his works at local fairs and gave lessons to the locals. He portrays an active involvement with with his large extended family, which often crossed and re-crossed the other prominent families of Hartford (i.e., Barnard, Channing, Dexter, Ely, Gallaudet, Gill, Goodrich, Hudson, Rockwell, Silsbee, Tappan, Terry, Tracy, Trumbull, Van Renselaer, and Wadsworth). Edward describes dancing and costume parties, soirees, teas, dinners, and receptions in private homes and public venues. He meets Charles Dickens and his wife when they come through Hartford in 1842, and describes brushes with other luminaries, such as Col. Thomas L. McKenney (who lectures on American Indians), and the Unitarian clergyman Rev. Henry Giles, who gave a pro-Irish speech. Other entertainments included a balloon ascension, exhibitions of mesmerism and hypnotism, parades, and performances by well-known groups. He also chronicles the progression of the construction of the Wadsworth Atheneum, and touches on his father’s far-reaching interests in the business world–canals, railroads, factories, and real estate. The cost of this valuable document of mid-19thC Hartford was generously underwritten entirely by a member of the Watkinson Trustees. Trinity College and the Watkinson Virtual Library has content on Edward Watkinson Wells. Yale College also: Edward Watkinson Wells also kept a diary, of which three volumes are preserved (folder 32). He describes a trip by steamboat to Florida, ca. 1855-1860, and the social life and customs he observed there. The other two volumes detail his daily life in Hartford during 1856-1860, and record the deaths of his father and David Watkinson in 1857. Other items contained in the William Wells...

Old Putney Bridge
By James Abbott McNeill Whistler
Located in New York, NY
James Whistler (1834-1903), Old Putney Bridge, 1879, etching and drypoint, signed in pencil with a large, elaborate shaded butterfly, lower right and inscribed imp (also signed with the butterfly in the plate), printed in dark-brown/black ink on laid paper, watermark ProPatria, an impression in Glasgow’s seventh (final) state, published by The Fine Art Society, probably printed in 1881, 8x 11 3/4 inches, sheet 12 1/8 x 16 1/8 inches. Reference: Kennedy 178; Glasgow 185. Provenance: Kraushaar Gallery, New York A fine impression, with wide margins. The Fine Art Societys relationship with Whistler began with the new etchings of the Thames he made in 1879, following a visit from Ernest Brown who had joined the staff of the gallery. The plate is on a large scale and shows the change in the artists approach to the Thames since the etchings he had made in Wapping and the docks in the summer of 1859. The central motif is the old bridge, by this stage somewhat dilapidated. It was shortly to be demolished and replaced by the new bridge of Cornish granite...
