Designed and drawn on stone by Charles Parsons. This large folio two-stone lithograph with original hand-coloring was published by Currier & Ives in 1867. Charles Parsons (1821-1910) was an American artist and lithographer who, after being apprenticed to the publisher George Endicott, worked for Nathaniel Currier, later Currier & Ives. He became head of the art department of Harper’s publishing firm in 1863.
The Yacht Henrietta was owned by James Gordon Bennett Jr., who also commanded her while she was in the U. S. Revenue Marine Service during the Civil War. She was in Revenue service from June 1861 to May 1862 and participated in the capture of Fernandina, Florida, in March 1862. In 1866 Yacht Henrietta won the Great Ocean Transatlantic Race.
James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (1841-1918) was, among many others things, publisher of the New York Herald – which his father founded. “He won the first-ever transatlantic yacht race in 1866, guiding the HENRIETTA on a two-week voyage from the New Jersey coast to the Isle of Wight. Aboard his next vessel, a steam yacht called the NAMOUNA, he entertained artists, painters, bon vivants, and even a very young Winston Churchill.” -Scherer
