the black hills that dot the landscape of the Belgian mining city in which she lives and has captured the shadows and shapes created by the grasses and trees of her own backyard. Ravaux’s close up look at the ordinary things around her are just as effective when viewed as abstract compositions of form and light. Her work was awarded the first prize at IBIZAGRAFIC ’92, the prestigious Spanish Biennial which prompted a solo exhibition of her mezzotints and the publication of a monograph. In 1994, Ravaux was selected for inclusion in Intergafia ’94 – World Award Winners Gallery in Katowice, Poland.

Christine Ravaux
Christine Ravaux is a Belgian artist, who uses nature in much of her work, which is both hyper-realistic and abstract in pattern. She was born in Charleroi, in 1961. She studied printmaking at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in Brussels and the Etterbeek Academy of Arts, where she learned more specifically, the black-way in the workshops of Mauritius Pasternak and Anne Dykmans. She received the Prix du Hainaut, in 1994 and the prize of the 1997 annual competition in the artistic creation of the Royal Academy of Letters, Sciences and Beaux-Arts of Belgium. Ravaux's mezzotints mirror her surroundings. This is a framed hand-colored botanical engraving entitled "Agave or American Aloe" by Reinagle for Robert Thornton's publication 'The Temple of Flora, or Garden of the Botanist, Poet, Painter and Philosopher', published in London in 1811. This beautiful botanical was created using several engraving techniques, including aquatint, mezzotint, stipple and line engraving methods. It was printed in color and then finished by hand.
The print is presented in a gold-colored wood frame and a heather green mat, which is enhanced with a gold fillet. The frame measures 21.63" high by 16.63" wide and 1" deep. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. All of the mounting materials are archival. The original text page from the early 19th century publication is attached to the rear of the frame. The print is in excellent condition.
Robert John Thornton (1765-1832) was attracted to natural history at an early edge and created his own botanical garden and an aviary as a boy.
