About the Item

"The Meeting of Her Majesty's Stag Hounds on Ascot Heath" is a large colorful mezzotint engraving of an extensive British hunting scene. It was created by Sir Francis Grant (1803–1878) and engraved by Frederick Bromley. It was published in London in 1839 by Hodgson & Graves. The engraving depicts an array of noblemen gathered in a large meadow with their many hunting dogs. Some of the men are on horseback, some are standing and others are in carriages awaiting the start of the hunt. A forest is present in the distance where they will presumably conduct the hunt. In the text are listed the names of many of the participants, including: The Earl of Chesterfield, Lord Plymouth, Lord Vernon, Lord Seagrave, Lord Sackville, Lord Wilton, Lord Somerset and The Duke of Rutland. The engraving is presented in a silver frame and a heather green French mat. The engraving is presented in a silver frame and a heather green French mat. There are occasional small spots, but the print is otherwise in very good condition. There is a rectangular area of discoloration in the lower left corner of the mat. There are scratch marks in the frame, some of which are intentional distressing. Sir Francis Grant was a Scottish portrait painter who painted Queen Victoria and many distinguished British aristocratic and political figures. He served as President of the Royal Academy.
