About the Item

St. Ippolyts. 1927. Etching. Comstock 36.11/iv. 5 3/8 x 4 3/4(sheet 10 1/16 x 8 3/8). Edition 32 in this state (total 91 recorded impressions). A rich impression with plate tone printed on antique laid paper. Remnants of 2 hinges in the top corners; horizontal fold in the lower margin, well away from the image; otherwise excellent condition. Ex-collection: Thomas Nason, N.A. (1889-1971). With the 'DHP' Dover House Press stamp and number '13' verso. Housed in an archival mat and a 13 3/4 x 11 1/4-inch champagne gold stepped frame. Signed in pencil. Comstock writes: 'The locality of this subject is in the parish of St.Ippolytus, a few miles from Hitchin, Hertfordshire; the church is dedicated to St. Hippolytus. Its topography, however, is poetical; it suggests a meditation, full of the sweetness of nature, upon a well-loved place, remembered as in the light of spring. The lambs in the meadow, the swallows in the lane, the lark in the sky, the rooks' nests seen amid the 'glad light green' of the elms, the grass and leaves sparkling in the sunlight and the shadows with dew and raindrops from the departing shower, all help to recall a May morning, casting its radiance over a scene of ancient country beauty and pastoral innocence. Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright, The bridall of the earth and skie.' Comstock describes the second state: Without the lettering, the lower margin having been cut off. There is a lark in the sky near the church weather-cock, which faces left. The foreground is more grassy and the cloud to the left is slightly darkened.' (p. 167). Griggs was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, in 1876. He studied at the Slade School of Art and worked for two years 1896-8 in the architectural office of C.E. Mallows, the architectural draughtsman. He worked in a visionary tradition deriving from William Blake, Samuel Palmer and Edward Calvert. Griggs created 57 prints in all, depicting idealized Gothic buildings and landscapes. He was Master of the Art-Workers' Guild, and one of first etchers to be elected to full membership of the Royal Academy.
