About the Item
"July Fifteenth" is a lithograph from 1938 by Grant Wood. The artwork size is 9 3/4 x 12 1/2 inches. The framed size is 17 x 19 1/2 x 5/8 inches. The piece is signed in pencil, lower right, "Grant Wood".
Following the success of American Gothic (1930), Grant Wood turned to images of the people, life, and landscape of the American heartland. In 1937 Wood delved into lithography with the same passion he had formerly used towards his oil painting. He completed nearly twice as many prints than oil compositions during the last years of his career. Lithographs are the last creative endeavor in Wood's career. Wood was a teacher at the University of Iowa, and this work was created during that time, near the end of his life. The print is a nice example of what Wood was best known for, his paintings depicting the rural American Midwest. The stylized Eastern Iowa terrain is created through a cross-hatching to give a sculptural quality to forms, a technique that had been developed by Neo-Impressionist Georges Seurat in his painting. Other editions of this print are in major museums such as the Amon Carter, Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian and the Whitney.
