About the Item
Etching with engraving on thin laid paper with an early and large unidentified heraldic watermark with a windmill, and the collector's stamp of Count F. J. von Enzenberg (1802-1879), Innsbruck, in the shape of the alphabetic characters FE topped with a crown in blue ink (Lugt 845) on the verso. 9 3/4 x 12 7/8 inches (247 x 326 mm), thread margins. Uniform age tone with scattered surface soiling, consistent with age. The plate number (1) is located between the two main bodies of text. A beautiful, early impression from Van Swanevelt's six plate series, The Story of Adonis.
[Hollstein 105].
A note on the collector's stamp:
Count Franz Jozef von Enzenberg zum Freyen und Jöchelsthurn, a member of the Austrian Herrenhaus and holder of various titles, devoted more than half a century to assembling a considerable collection of prints. Gifted with excellent taste and a strong historical sense, he took advantage of a time when these prints often fetched prices that today seem ridiculous. He attended the major auctions of his time and often acquired entire collections. Many of the pieces in his collection were extremely rare, and several of his unique prints are mentioned in Passavant's Le Peintre-Graveur and other handbooks. His Tratzberg Castle in Tyrol, restored under his direction, is further proof of his love of beauty.

Herman van Swanevelt
Herman van Swanevelt or Herman Swanevelt, born in Woerden in 1603 and died in Paris in 1655, was a Dutch painter and engraver. He mainly painted landscapes. His training is very little known. He worked in several places outside Holland, in Spain, Paris and Italy. His first known painting dates from 1630.
In 1629, he went to Rome and painted many landscapes, in which he took a particular interest in the treatment of light. His reputation extended to the powerful Barberini family, who commissioned paintings from him, as did the Vatican.
He painted landscapes for Philip IV of Spain in Madrid.
In 1644 he was appointed "ordinary painter to the king" at the court of France. From 1650 until his death, he lived most often in Paris. That same year, he obtained a royal privilege to publish his prints. In France, he worked on the decoration of the Hôtel Lambert, for which he executed the landscapes for the paneling of the "Gallery of Love" (visible today at the Louvre Museum). In 1653, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. He was the protégé of Cardinal Richelieu and Louis XIV.

Franciscus de Neve C17 engravings: Landscape with Shepherdess/Echo & Narcissus
By Franciscus de Neve

Franciscus de Neve (c.1632-1704)
'Landscape with Shepherdess Playing a Tambourine' and
'Echo & Narcissus'
Engravings
Both signed in the lower margin: 'Franciscus de Neue In. e fecit' and 'Si Stampano in Roma da Gio: Iacomo de Rossi alla Paca'
Each 31.5 x 38.5cm (plate)
Franciscus (or Frans) de Neve was a Flemish painter and engraver, born in Antwerp in 1632. His father, also an artist, was called by the same name, resulting in some confusion for art historians. The younger de Neve was working in Rome from 1660-1670, producing paintings for the Palazzo Doria-Pamphili (alongside Pietro da Cortona) and was known for his religious subjects, mythological scenes and landscapes. He was part of a network of Dutch and Flemish artists in the city, who helped to promote and support his career. Many of his works are known only from the engravings which in Rome were produced by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi alla Pace (including these examples). After 1670 he travelled to Augsburg and Munich, then to Austria and Moravia, where he completed numerous commissions for altarpieces. Towards the end of his life he returned to his native Flanders and became Master of the Guild of Saint Luke.

De Neve had a reputation as a gifted landscape painter, and these two engravings show his keen interest in the details of the natural world, as well as the influence of Claude Lorrain in the extensive vistas. The painting of ‘Narcissus and Echo...
