About the Item

Using vibrant color and smoky contours, his paintings evoke both the avant-garde graphic sensibilities of Les Nabis, Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, and the radical color palette and sensuous portraiture of Kees van Dongen. Born in Paris in 1935, Cassigneul was granted his first solo exhibition at the age of 17 at Galerie Lucy Krohg. He first studied at the ’École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and, later, with the French painter Roger Chapelain-Midy. In 1958, he had his first exhibition at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts and in the same year, at the unprecedented age of 23, he was appointed a member of the committee of the Salon d’Automne. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, Jean Pierre Cassigneul has been the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. He has exhibited widely and with success throughout Europe, Japan and the United States, including shows at the Gallery Tivey Faucon in Paris, Gallery Tamenaga in Japan, and with Wally Findlay Gallery in New York. Cassigneul continues to live and work in Paris.
