Joan Barbarà i Gómez (1927-2013) - Landscape Engraving - Hand signed Engraving measures 12x25 cm. Paper measures 22x40 cm. Unframed. Joan Barbarà i Gómez or Barberá (Barcelona, 1927 - ibid, December 7, 2013) was a painter, engraver and lithographer, one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary Spanish engraving. A disciple of Édouard Chimot, he began exhibiting in 1944 and practiced all types of engraving in Francesc Mèlich's workshop. His first individual exhibition, of painting and engraving, took place at the Galerías Layetanas in Barcelona in 1957. That same year he moved to Paris with a scholarship from the Círculo Maillol of the French Institute, and attended the La Grande Chaumière academy. He worked with the Catalan engraver Lluís Bracons —with whom he founded the Atelier de Recherches Plàstiques et Techniques Calcographiques—4 and in the Leblanc and Lacourière-Frélaut workshops, as well as with the lithographer Fernand Mourlot. In Paris he had the opportunity to print engravings by Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, among others. He met Miró in Paris in 1951 and was united by a friendship that arose from his own work and collaboration with him; de Picasso highlighted his challenge to technique, "he was always trying to force and outwit it" and he also worked extensively in Spain with Antoni Tápies, whom he defined as "the dense emergence of a meaning, a code still to be deciphered". Back in Barcelona in 1966, he joined Gustau Gili's workshop until 1975, also stamping works by notable artists, to later continue the task in his own workshop. Barbarà's work has always been that of a very personal artist who put his great technical knowledge at the service of intense creativity. It began in a classical style, like the etchings that illustrate the book El Collsacabra by Joan Triadú (c. 1952-1953), but it evolved towards its own style where the imprint of the avant-garde was evident, but always on the basis of a profound connoisseur. of the trade and great aesthetic independence. Of his achievements, it is worth mentioning the etchings for the Catalan translation that Carles Riba made of La cançó d'amor i de mort del corneta Christoph Rilke by Rainer Maria Rilke (1965), the compilation La masía (1986) —whose chalcographic matrices are preserved in the Graphic Unit of the Library of Catalonia—, Empúries, inici d'un return with texts selected by Alexis Eudald Solà (1992) or From Paris to Olot, published by the Xavier Nogués Foundation (2005), which paid tribute to him. In addition, he made many independent engravings and his work as a painter is also of great quality, although he always remained in the background after the success of his work as an engraver. He was a full member of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of San Jorge, in which became a supernumerary in 2011.7 He was also a member of the board of trustees of the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation, an institution with which he collaborated by conducting engraving workshops in Son Boter and to which he donated a hundred proofs of engraving, models and plates, fruit of his collaboration with Joan Miró between 1976 and 1982. In 2014 and 2015, the Library of Catalonia acquired the chalcographic matrices and prints, made by the artist in his Calcographic Workshop in Barcelona; original sketches and drawings; as well as models and bibliophile books.
