John Thomas Smith
'Near Mrs. Teshmakers, Edmonton' original etching by John Thomas Smith

1793

About the Item

The present is one of the many prints John Thomas Smith produced of English cottages and vernacular architecture. This example, a view of a cottage in Edmonton, is closely related to a series of 20 etchings that Smith would publish in 1797 under the title "Remarks on rural scenery with twenty etchings of cottages, from nature and some observations and precepts relative to the pictoresque." The use of the word 'pictoresque,' an old spelling of 'picturesque,' indicates that Smith's cottages are early examples of Romantic landscape imagery, taking delight in the intersection of civilized man and wild nature. 5.25 x 6.5 inches, artwork 14.75 x 16.13 inches, frame Drawn by John Thomas Smith, 1793 Published by Nathaniel Smith, father of John Thomas Smith, 1795 Signed and dated in the plate, top center Entitled in the plate, bottom center Inscribed in the plate upper left "Drawn and Etch'd by J.T. Smith, Engraver of the Antiquities of London and Environs" Publisher inscription in the plate, bottom center "Pubd. Aug 1, 1795 by N. Smith, Rembrandt's Head Gt. Mays Buildings, St. Martins Lane." Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting; housed in a gold gilded moulding. John Thomas Smith (1766-1833) was a painter, engraver and antiquarian, born in London, and the son of a sculptor. His father worked under sculptor Daniel Nollekens, where Smith first received his artistic training, but left to study drawing with John Keyse Sherwin and at the Royal Academy. Smith published books of engravings and worked as a drawing master in Edmonton. In 1807 he published Antiquities of Westminster which has been described as his major work. Between 1810 and 1815, Smith created drawings and engravings of notable beggars in London and published The Streets of London: Anecdotes of Their More Celebrated Residents. Smith was offered the position of Keeper of the Prints department of the British Museum in September 1816 which, still allowed Smith to sketch and draw until his death. Source: Wikipedia
