Etching with hand coloring in watercolor on cream wove paper, 7 1/2 x 10 (190 x 255); sheet 16 1/4 x 22 (414 x 560 mm), full margins. In good condition with saturated color, scattered light surface soiling and some edge wear.
This engraving after a drawing by John Webber comes from the official account of Cook's third voyage, "A voyage to the Pacific Ocean," published by Scatcherd and Whitaker in 1784. Captain James Cook (1728-1779) made three separate voyages to the Pacific (with the ships Endeavour, Resolution, Adventure, and Discovery). Cook not only made first contact with Pacific cultures, but also assembled the first large-scale collections of Pacific objects to be brought back to Europe. He was killed in Hawaii in 1779. John Webber was the artist on Cook’s third voyage from 1776-1780. Many of the drawings from this period show snowy scenes, especially of the town and harbour of St. Peter and St. Paul. The print depicts a type of sled used for transportation in the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia.

John Webber
John Webber (1751-1793) was recommended to the Admiralty for appointment as artist for the Captain Cook's 3rd voyage by the Swedish botanist Daniel Carlsson Solander (1733-1782) who had accompanied Cook on his first voyage. Just 24 years old when he joined the Captain Cook’s ship the Resolution at Plymouth one week prior to departure, Webber's skill in both portraiture and landscape resulted in a visual record of Cook's third voyage that is unsurpassed in the annals of 18th century exploration.
