About the Item

Leonora Carrington (British-Mexican 1917 - 2011) was a painter, writer, and key figure in Surrealism whose work explored the sacred, the mystical, and the magical in everyday life. Born into an upper-class Irish-Catholic family in Lancashire, England, she resisted societal expectations and pursued art, studying at the Ozenfant Academy in London. She met Max Ernst in 1937 and lived briefly with him in France before World War II forced her to flee Europe, a journey that included internment in a Spanish psychiatric hospital. Settling in Mexico City, Carrington joined a community of expatriate artists, and her career spanned eight decades. The Masters Exhibit features a striking color lithograph depicting a ritualistic scene observed by attentive animals, all very recognizable as parts Carrington’s distinctive artistic voice.
