About

Lillian Adelman (American 1899-1985) I LIKE NEW YORK Lithograph, c.1935-43, edition about 25. Signed and titled in pencil. With the "Federal Art Project NYC WPA," rubber stamp in the lower margin. Image 17 1/2 x 13 1/8 inches. Printed on wove paper with a Rives watermark. In generally good condition with full margins. Sheet size: 23 x 16 inches. This print was actually published by the Federal Arts Project in New York and bears their stamp. The term WPA print is used rather loosely and incorrectly by many people when they really mean American Regionalism of the 1930's. The project initiated by Roosevelt was part of a wide spread Government Public Works of Art Project created as a means of support during the Great Depression. The editions of the WPA are generally thought be about 25, therefore they are fairly scarce. The project was organized into regions and New York was one region. There were general guidelines, however the Regions operated with sometimes slightly different procedures. This print and artist seem to be scarce. The "WPA Artwork in the Non-Federal Repositories" catalog (Museums) Published by the General Services Administration does not show an impression of "I Like New York". Only 2 Museums have Adelman's WPA prints. The Newark Museum has 20 and the Philadelphia Museum of Art has 11. Neither has an impression of "I Like New York." There was a point several year ago where the US General Services Administration (GSA) was claiming that the stamped prints were Federal property. However they have dropped that claim. The artists were allowed to keep a few impressions and others were given to members of Congress and others. So It impossible for the GSA to clearly claim title to any single impression as it might be one of the above.
