About

MARIAN HEBERT (1899-1960) GLOXINIA, 1937 Aquatint as published by the WPA / Federal Art Project. Received July 12, 1939. 8 ¾ x 6 ¾”. The WPA published prints are generally thought to be editions of 25. Signed and dated 1937 in pencil. This impression illustrated in "Emerging From The Shadows, A Survey of Woman Artists Working in California, 1860-1960" St-Gaudens, Morsman and Folb, Schiffer Publishing, 2015 vol 2. This print was actually published by the Federal Arts Project in California, and bears their label on the verso. The term WPA print is used rather loosely and incorrectly by many people when they really mean American Regionalism of the 1930's. The project initiated by Roosevelt was part of a wide spread Government Public Works of Art Project created as a means of support during the Great Depression. The editions of the WPA are generally thought be about 25, therefore they are fairly scarce. This print was published as part of the California WPA project. The project was organized into regions and California was one region. There were general guidelines, however the Regions operated with sometimes slightly different procedures. Several years ago the US General Services Administration (GSA) was claiming that the stamped and labeled prints were Federal property. However they have dropped that claim. The artists were allowed to keep a few impressions and others were given to members of Congress and others. So It impossible for the GSA to clearly claim title to any single impression as it might be one of the above.
