About the Item
A beautiful aquatint etching of a serene pastoral scene in the Picardy region of northern France by Paul Emile Lecomte (1877-1950). A mother and child are seen walking down a path in a rural area, with a small village in the distance.
Lecomte was a student of his famous father, the painter Paul Lecomte Sr. (1842-1920). He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He often painted in both oils and watercolors with an Impressionist style He used soft, muted colors to create paintings that had a tranquil and peaceful quality. He painted landscapes, portraits, and seascapes. His subjects are commonly serene harbors, markets, and pastoral rural scenes, many in Brittany and Normandy. His paintings have exceeded $10,000 at auction. Lecomte also produced striking aquatint etchings resembling watercolor paintings in their appearance, of which this offering is an example.
This aquatint etching is hand signed in pencil in the lower right. It is presented in a natural tan wood frame with a grey silk mat and a thin dark inner mat.

- "Pillory, Charing Cross" by Rowlandson from "The Microcosm of London"By Thomas RowlandsonLocated in Alamo, CA"Pillory, Charing Cross" is an illustration (Plate 62) from "The Microcosm of London", published in London in 1809 by R Ackermann's Repository of Arts. The scene was created by one of the most famous British satirists and caricaturists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries' Georgian Period, Thomas Rowlandson, who drew the figures, while Augustus Charles Pugin drew the architecture. The plate was then created by Hill, Stadler and Bluck using a combination of aquatint and etching and was then hand colored with watercolor. Scenes illustrated in "The Microcosm of London" gives an accurate and often comical view of everyday life in London during the Regency Period of the early 19th century. While Pugin’s excellent architectural drawings capture the size and shape of the exterior as well as the interior of London’s principal buildings, Thomas Rowlandson’s insightful and often whimsical and satirical view of the city's inhabitants depicts the color and vitality of the late Georgian society, both rich and poor alike. This print depicts the "Pillory, Charing Cross", where criminals were brought and placed on display while secure in the stocks, as are seen in this print. A crowd is present in the square jeering at the prisoners. A statue of Charles I on horseback stands atop a very large pillar to the right. Shops with apartments are seen on the left. Young wealthy people frolic around and on a carriage on the right in front of the statue of King...Category

- "Skating on Ladies' Pond Central Park": Winslow Homer 19th C. Woodcut EngravingBy Winslow HomerLocated in Alamo, CAThis Winslow Homer woodcut engraving entitled "Skating on the Ladies' Skating-Pond in Central Park, New York", was published in Harper's Weekly in the January 28, 1860 edition. It depicts a large number of men, women and children skating on a recently opened pond in Central Park. At the time of publication of this engraving, Central Park was in the early stages of construction. This engraving documents the very early appearance of Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux's masterpiece of landscape design. According to Olmsted, the park was "of great importance as the first real Park made in this century – a democratic development of the highest significance". The people of New York were very proud of the plans for their park. It was stated at the time: "Our Park, which is progressing very satisfactorily under the management of the Commissioners, will undoubtedly be, one of these days, one of the finest place of the kind in the world...Those who saw the Park before the engineers went to work on it are amazed at the beautiful sites which have been contrived with such unpromising materials; all fair persons believe that the enterprise is managed with honesty and good taste." Skating was rapidly rising in national popularity in part due to the opening of Central Park’s lake to skaters on a Sunday in December 1858 with 300 participants. The following Sunday it attracted ten thousand skaters. By Christmas Day, a reported 50,000 people came to the park, most of them to skate. There were rules governing who could use the skating pond. “The Ladies’ Pond...Category
