About the Item

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Untitled Landscape” is a serigraph in various shades of green and orange. Although it has an Art Nouveau feel to it, it can be described as Lyrical Abstraction. He was born in Belgian, but has lived and worked in France since 1951. His work is related to tachisme, abstract expressionism and lyrical abstraction. This is signed by the artist and numbered 13/100 on the lower right front. Serigraphy, also known as silk screening, screen printing or serigraph printing, is a stencil-based printing process in which ink is forced through a fine screen onto the paper beneath. Screens were originally made of silk, but they are now made of finely woven polyester or nylon.A different screen is used for each colour in the print, resulting in a final serigraph with great colour density, colour saturation and texture. In 1944 he attended the l’Ecole national superieure d’Architecture et des Arts decoratifs de la Cambre, Brussels, where he studied illustration techniques, printing and photography. In 1945 he discovered the work of Henri Michaux Jean Debuffet and developed a friendship with the art critic Jacques Putman. In 1949 he joined Christian Dotremont, Karel Appel, Constant, Jan Nieuwenhuys and Asger Jorn to form the art group COBRA. He participated both with the COBRA exhibitions and went to Paris to study engraving at Atelier 17 under the guidance of Stanley Willaim Hayter in 1951. In 1954 he had his first exhibition in Paris and started to become interested in Chinese and Japanese calligraphy. In the early 1950s he was the Paris correspondent for the Japanese journal Bokubi (the Beauty of Ink) published by Morita Shiryu of the Bokujinkai group. In 1955, encouraged by Henri Storck and Luc de Heusch, he left for Japan with his wife. He exhibited Night, 1952 (Ohara Museum of Art, Kurashiki) and made a film: Japanese Calligraphy. 1960 he had exhibited in London, Bern and at the Venice Biennial, and then in Pittsburgh, New York City, Amsterdam and Silkeborg as his international reputation grew. He worked with Walasse Ting and developed links with Andre Breton. His international career continued throughout the seventies and by 1983 he became Professor of painting at the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. For the season 2018/2019 at the Vienna State Opera Pierre Alechinsky designed the large-scale picture (176 sqm) Loin d'ici as part of the exhibition series Safety Curtain, conceived by museum in progress. His worked is collected world-wide in museums and private collections. Print measures 28" h x 19.50" w. With matte it measures 32.50" h x 25" w.

Joyce T. Nagel Print "Vegetable Forms No. 9" "1st State" Signed Dated Ltd Ed
Located in Detroit, MI
"Vegetable Forms No. 9" "1st State" is a beautiful linear design woodcut of an artichoke. What is intellectually interesting is the fractal beauty of nature found in the artichoke. A fractal is a kind of pattern that we observe often in nature and in art. Whenever you observe a series of patterns repeating over and over again, at many different scales, and where any small part resembles the whole, that’s a fractal. The Artichoke is the perfect example in that the shape of the leaves repeat themselves and they are the same shape as the fruit itself. Fractals are exciting, not only for their mathematical or conceptual representation, but also for the fact that you can visualise the math—and it’s beautiful! This print is rendered in an intense green with a light blue color to delineate the intriguing linear element of the artichoke's leaves. Joyce Tilley Nagel...
