About the Item

An urban realist painter, Marsh was born in Paris, France and began drawing as early as the age of three. His artistic studies were done at Yale University, the Art Student League in New York and in Paris. Marsh was a member of the National Academy, the Royal Society of Artists, London, the Southern Vermont Artists and the Woodstock Art Association. His works were exhibited at the Salons of America (1925-1934), the Society of Independent Artists (1939), the Corcoran Gallery (1923-1957), the Art Institute of Chicago (1931) and the Salmagundi Club. Marsh also had 16 solo exhibits at the Rehn Gallery, New York City. Marsh's works can be found in important private and public collections around the country, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He also produced WPA murals, and was a staff artist for the New York Daily News as well as a free-lance illustrator for The New Yorker and Esquire.
