This limited edition print is from Ross Racine's "Metropolitan Gardens,” series, in which the artist depicts realistic aerial views of fictional suburban communities. These works on paper present structural layouts of invented subdivisions, which in many ways illustrate the isolated conditions common in these types of developments.
Racine’s work is photorealistic, but not photographic, it is completely created from beginning to end by Racine without a camera or a photographic reference. Racine is an omniscient surveillance camera in the sky, his world is filled with the contradictory bravado of a demented city planner. His suburbs have no zoning, roads go nowhere, or way too far. They are at once wholly improbable and completely possible, and they remind us how misguided we can be. They poke fun at human nature, at grandiosity, and impracticality.
Racine’s works are line and texture, with the flattened plane of a satellite photograph—no horizon line, no sky. The subtle tones and photographic grain often veer almost to complete abstraction, only to be brought back by what is undeniably a house with trees around it and a garage. The buildings themselves become patterns, the uniform and also very random lines of the streets and the patchwork grains in the fields form uneven grids. These works on paper have as much in common with oriental rugs or quilted blankets as they do with Google maps. They tell a story.

Ross Racine
Ross Racine was born in 1952 in Montreal. Racine's works are drawn freehand on a computer and no photographs are used in the process. These imagined, aerial views of suburban development consider our society and methods of transportation within and around suburban developments. These drawings of aerial views use the distant, perpendicular mode of viewing for its reflective capabilities as a way of thinking about design, the city and society in general. His prints have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Canada and Europe, most recently at the Des Moines Art Center, The Vienna Künstlerhaus, the International Print Triennial in Katowice, the Koffler Centre of the Arts, the International Print Center New York and the Front Room Gallery in New York. A selection of Racine's prints has won the biennial prize at the 2011 Biennale Internationale de Gravure Contemporaine in Liège, Belgium. His work is in several collections, including the New York Public Library Print Collection, the Des Moines Art Center, the Johnson & Johnson collection and the Hallmark collection. He currently lives in Montreal and sometimes in New York.

Glowing and contemplative, Ross Bleckner’s work blends abstraction with recognizable symbols to create meditations on perception, transcendence and loss.
Ross Bleckner was born in 1949 in New York and grew up in the prosperous town of Hewlett Harbor on Long Island. The first art exhibition he saw—The Responsive Eye, a show of Op art on view at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965—had a strong impact on him. He decided to become an artist when he was in college, studying with Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close at New York University, where he earned a BA in 1971. Two years later, he completed an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, where he met David Salle.
After moving back to New York, Bleckner purchased and moved into a Tribeca loft building in 1974. Painter Julian Schnabel rented three floors of the building, and the Mudd Club, a nightclub frequented by musicians and artists, occupied space there from 1977 to 1983. Bleckner sold the building in 2004. His first solo exhibition was held in 1975 at Cunningham Ward Gallery in New York. In 1979 he began his long association with Mary Boone Gallery in New York, which championed several of the so-called art stars of the 1980s. In 1981 Bleckner met Thomas Ammann, an important Swiss art dealer who went on to collect his work.
