About the Item
Sidney Chafetz (1922-2013) is an outstanding American printmaker whose career stretched from the 1940s through the twentieth century.
A Rhode Island native, Sidney Chafetz attended the Rhode Island School of Design. His education was interrupted by WWII. Chafetz was drafted into the US Army and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from RISD in 1947 and in 1948 began teaching at Ohio State University where he established the printmaking program. He retired in 1982 as professor emeritus. Over the years he received Fulbright, Ford Foundation, and Tiffany grants. He was a major force to his students and colleagues.
This lithograph, ProvidenceLandscape, 1946, is a very early print -- he's only just home from the war. It is extremely scarce and is signed, titled, and dated, in pencil.
