About the Item

Thomas Hart Benton (American, 1889 - 1975) was a painter, muralist, and printmaker whose sinuous, rhythmic style came to define the Regionalist movement. His paintings and lithographs captured the energy of rural and small-town America, portraying working people with empathy and power. Benton’s lifelong commitment to accessible art and his deep connection to the Midwest helped shape the course of twentieth-century American painting. He produced ninety-two lithographs between 1929 and 1974, and our piece—depicting canoeists—is a rare subject among them, offering a glimpse into the artist’s affection for the vitality and persistence of ordinary life.
