About the Item

Tilmann Krieg Morning at St. Malo from folio "Bretagnemappe Finis Terrae" Color Etching Image Size: 4.72 x 7.08 inches (12 x 18 cm) Sheet Size: 10.43 x 15.55 (26.5 x 39.5 cm) Signed in pencil, numbered and titled Edition: 25 of 50 *Framing Options Available. Please Inquire. The German artist Tilmann Krieg is a photographic painter. His images appear blurred, as if intentionally taken out of focus or layered with other photographs. In doing so, he transforms fleeting visual elements into something more profound—imbuing them with meaning that transcends traditional notions of representation and photographic immediacy. Krieg’s work moves beyond surface appearance or trust in the literal image. The more his figures dissolve into the flow of time and transience, the more his photographs evolve into painterly works. They carry a poetic dimension and evoke a dense, lyrical atmosphere that is deeply expressive. This transformation is particularly evident in his dynamic Metro series, one of the artist’s central themes. Here, the urban environment becomes an iconographic symbol of everyday life and the identity of the modern individual. Constantly on the move, always en route to somewhere else, contemporary people appear in these works as anonymous figures whose identities blur into the rhythm of their fast-paced lives. The viewer’s gaze follows these vanishing silhouettes, interwoven with light and shadow. One cannot help but think of an urban womb—offering protection to these nameless beings. In this sense, Krieg’s photographic paintings symbolize the fleeting nature of existence: beings in motion, apparitions in the current of time, figures dissolving into shadow and ultimately disappearing into nothingness. Tilmann Krieg, photographic painting, blurred imagery, Metro series, lyrical atmosphere, urban identity, transient figures, poetic photography, motion and shadow, contemporary anonymity, visual transience, painterly photography, modern existence, anonymous subjects, urban womb
