Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando Hiroshige)
Nakatsugawa - 46th Station - Original Woodcut by Hiroshige Utagawa

1834/35

About

Nakatsugawa - 45th Station is a beautiful colored woodblock print on paper made by the Japanese master Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). The signature is printed in red ink on the lower margin, whilst an inscription is printed in red and black ink on the higher left margin. The artwork is from Hiroshige's famous series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidô Road realized in collaboration with Keisei Eisen. The Kisokaido ran from Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto along the mountains through the center of Japan, joining up with the Tokaido for the last several stations. The Kisokaido series of prints includes twenty-three designs by Eisen, with the rest by Hiroshige. Jointly published by Takenouchi-Hoeido and Kinjudo, the first prints were released around 1835. In very good conditions, very well-inked, revealing a full mastery of this artistic technique. The artwork shows Nakatsugawa station located in the present-day city of Nakatsugawa. As with all of Hiroshige's works, this too shows a poetic and atmospheric scene that offers a captivating vision of the beautiful countryside of Japan. Included frame: 34 x 2.5 x 49.5 cm Utagawa Hiroshige, better known as Hiroshige (Edo, 1797 - Edo, 1858) When it comes to ukiyo-e artists there are not many legendary names like Utagawa Hiroshige. Born in 1797, the iconic master of wood-block prints became famous thanks to his extraordinarily landscape paintings. A student of Utagawa Toyohiro (circa 1773-1829), he studied the western style introduced by the founder of the Utagawa school, Toyoharu (1735-1814). Together with Hokusai he is considered one of the leading Japanese landscape painters of the nineteenth century and one of the most famous representatives of the Ukiyo-e art movement. With an immense artistic production that counts more than 400 engravings of actors, warriors, courtesans, and above all naturalistic landscapes, Hiroshige placed at the center of his research the contemplation of nature and its representation in a morphologically harmonic key: the human feeling linked to the almost religious listening to nature and the breath of the cosmos. His most famous series is "The 100 Famous Edo Views". Hiroshige had an extraordinary influence on European painting of the late nineteenth century, especially impressed the Impressionists and post-impressionists, including Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh.
