About the Item
The Old Lyme Congregational Church located on Ferry Road, a quintessentially New England landmark, was captured by Walter DuBois Richards. The church was a favorite subject of Old Lyme Art Colony painters. It is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Five other Congregational churches were built on essentially the same design in the Connecticut towns of Milford (1823), Cheshire (the 1827 First Congregational Church of Cheshire), Litchfield (the 1829 First Congregational Church of Litchfield), Southington (1830), and Guilford (the 1830 First Congregational Church of Guilford). All six churches have front porticos with four fluted columns, the doors of all six have the same dimensions, all six steeples are of the same design and are surmounted by weathervanes that appear to have been cast from one mold.
Artist Walter DuBois Richards has been called a "town treasure" by his legion of admirers, not only for his teaching and guidance, but because he has been the visual and nostalgic chronicler of New Canaan. In his favorite medium, lithography, he has recorded the old railroad station, the library, Waveny Mansion and the parks in spring and winter. His work was lauded in a 1982 Connecticut Society of Architects' Award for Environmental Improvement which cited him as "one of Connecticut's most respected painters and illustrators whose lithographs, watercolors and drawings have fostered pride in our heritage and have helped preserve historic buildings for future generations." This recognition is only one in a very long list of awards and prizes Richards has received since he first exhibited in the 1933 May Show at the Cleveland Art Museum. He was given the highest award there in lithography for four consecutive years, 1933 to 1936. In 1937 six of his lithographs and two linocuts were included in the Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition, Paintings and Prints by Cleveland Artists. The same year he participated in an international exhibition in Paris, and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. In 1966 his work was included in Two Hundred Years of Watercolor Painting in America at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and ten years later, in Two Hundred Years of American Illustration at the New York Historical Society. His most recent accolade was the selection of his 1935 linoleum cut, Woodcutters, for inclusion in the catalogue "Prints at the Smithsonian, the Origins of a National Collection", published in conjunction with an exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Smithsonian Institution in the Hall of Graphic Arts. He was, in good company, "along with Durer and Rembrandt."

The Old Uppsala Church (Sweden)
Located in New Orleans, LA
"Old Uppsala Church" was done in small edition of 15. This impression is #3.
Gamla Uppsala (Swedish: Old Uppsala) is a parish and a village outside Uppsala in Sweden.
As early as the 3rd century AD and the 4th century AD and onwards, it was an important religious, economic and political centre. Early written sources claim that already during pre-history, Gamla Uppsala was well known in Northern Europe as the residence of Swedish kings of the legendary Yngling dynasty In fact, the oldest Scandinavian sources, such as Ynglingatal, the Westrogothic law and the Gutasaga talk of the King of the Swedes (Suiones) as the "King at Uppsala".
During the Middle Ages, it was the largest village of Uppland, the eastern part of which probably originally formed the core of the complex of properties belonging to the Swedish Crown, the so-called Uppsala öd, of which the western part consisted of the royal estate...

Dark House
By Earl Horter
Located in New Orleans, LA
Dark House is a soft-ground etching with aquatint signed in pencil by the artist. This image is in the collection of the Detroit Institute of the Arts
Printmaker Earl Horter, born in 1881 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, was known for his realistic etchings and aquatints of urban scenes, though he was also an illustrator and painter. As a teenager, he engraved stock certificates. He was essentially self-taught, though he did take an etching class when he moved to New York City in 1903 to work for an advertising agency. Horter had a one-man show in 1916 in New York City at the Frederick Keppel and Company gallery. He was given the exhibition by Carl Zigrosser, later the first Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum of Modern Art. Horter was back in Philadelphia in 1917, where he would remain until his death in 1940. He worked there as art director for the N. W. Ayer advertising firm from 1917-1923.
Horter was a member of the Society of Illustrators. He exhibited at the Pan American Exposition in 1915 in San Francisco, California; the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; and the Philadelphia Print Club's National Exhibition of Prints; as well as Corcoran Gallery biennials from 1935 to 1939, in Washington, D.C. Horter is listed in "Mantle Fielding's Dictionary of American Artists"; "Who Was Who in American Art"; and Mallett's "Index of Artists".
Though not a man of extraordinary means, Horter was a lover of modernist art, which he gradually purchased, creating an important collection, well ahead of its time in America, of Cubist and Precisionist works, as well as African sculpture and Native American artifacts. Artists Horter collected include Europeans Picasso, Braque, Duchamp and Brancusi, and Americans Charles Sheeler and Arthur B. Carles. He was a friend of Carles, as well as other artists and collectors such as Leopold Stokowski, conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra; Franklin Watkins; S. S. White; and Carroll Tyson...
