Original 1825 aquatint "View from Fishkill Looking To West-Point". The print comes from the Hudson River Portfolio, a monument of American printmaking produced through the collaboration of artists, a writer, and publishers after a series of watercolor paintings by artist William Guy Wall. The print shows a view of the Hudson River from Fishkill, New York, looking south along the Hudson River toward West Point. A side-wheel steamship heads south on the river, and a herder tends three cows at the water's edge, and another man with a stick, in the lower right corner. Geographic features include Popellel Island (image's center), Breakneck Ridge (image's left side), Storm King Mountain (image's right side) and Bear Mountain (image's center-background). Artist Wall spent the summer of 1820 traversing over 200 miles of the Hudson River's 315-mile course and sketched, then painted a series of large watercolors, resulting in 20 plates that were engraved as aquatints by master printer John Hill and published between 1821 and 1825 by Henry Megarey in New York. John Hill's aquatint technique is fully visible in this rare uncolored artist proof. Hill employed a stipple technique, building up planes of softly graduated tones, together with his superb draftsmanship skills, resulted in unparalleled print detail and beauty. Hill was the son of British aquatint engraver John Hill. He emigrated with his parents from London to the United States in 1819, initially living in Philadelphia. In 1822 the family moved to New York, where Hill apprenticed in aquatint engraving in his father's shop. He died in West Nyack, New York in 1879. The Hudson River Portfolio was one of the first publications to make Americans aware of the beauty of their own country. Wall's landscapes were straightforward representations of America's awe-inspiring vistas -- neither romanticized nor idealized. In the decade after its publication, the popularity of the Portfolio stimulated new appreciation for American landscape, and prepared the way for the Hudson River School. William Guy Wall was born in Dublin in 1792 and arrived in New York in 1812. He is considered as a forerunner of the Hudson River school. He was a founding member of the National Academy of Design in New York, and exhibited frequently at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Apollo Association in New York. He lived in America from 1812 to 1835 and again from 1856 to 1860. He returned to Ireland in 1860 and died in Dublin in 1864. Image size: 14 x 21 1/4 inches.
