About the Item

Art Sz: 15 3/4"H x 19 3/4"W Frame Sz: 25"H x 28 1/2"W Limited edition copy number 626/ 2400 Pencil signed LL by the artist Blindstamp LR: The Wildlife Legislative Fund of America Larry Hayden is a visual artist whose drawings and photographs reflect his fascination with his domestic environment and its feathered inhabitants. An ongoing series of photographs spanning nearly five years show him to be an animalier; his subject is his small flock of laying hens who share with him a picturesque 19th century Maine farm that once covered one hundred thirty acres, and whose Northern edge was the Presumpscot River. Now reduced to a bit less than one acre and surrounded by residential Portland, it is this little world that is the core subject of Larry’s work. His photographs; paintings; and drawings are in respected collections including the Portland Museum of Art; Bates College Art Museum; the Colby Museum of Art; The Farnsworth Museum; the Fine Art Collection of William and Hobart Smith Colleges, and the University of New England Art Gallery, as well as distinguished corporate, institutional, and private collections. Larry’s work has been included in many publications including Design Language, 2006, Tim McCreight, Brynmorgen Press; Abstract Art, Dean Nimmer, 2002; Maine Art Now, Edgar Allen Beem, 1990; North of Boston, Centennial Edition, Robert Frost, The Ascensius Press, 2014. In 2013 he collaborated with Scott Vile of the Ascensius Press to produce PULLUM, a book of photographs of the author’s chickens with all text written in the Latin language. He is the founder and director of the Portland Portrait Society, a group dedicated to creating portraits of illustrious living members of the Maine artistic and cultural world.

Mallard Drakes (Louisiana Honkers)

Mallard Drakes (Louisiana Honkers) Drypoint, c. 1940 Signed in pencil lower right (see photo) Titled in pencil lower left (see photo) Note: A famous image by Kleiber. It is was made in a hand colored version which commands a large premium. Condition: Excellent Image/Plate size: 9 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches Hans Kleiber (1887-1967) Hans Norbert Kleiber, painter, etcher, illustrator, and naturalist, was born in Cologne, Germany on August 24, 1887. He emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1900, settling in Massachusetts before moving to Wyoming. Kleiber first worked in lumber camps before working for the United States Forest Service from 1906 until 1924. One of his duties as a ranger was to monitor the logging camps in the Bighorn Mountains. Kleiber was primarily self-taught as an artist and it was in the 1920s that he began devoting himself to art. It appears that he first began to work in watercolor and oil but was producing etchings and drypoints as early as 1924. He traversed the mountains of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, and his subjects are drawn from the pristine landscapes and wildlife. Kleiber's first exhibition of his etchings was mounted in 1928 at Goodspeed's Book Shop in Boston. His etching, Crossing the Platte, was included in the 1939 New York World's Fair exhibition, American Art Today. There was an exhibition of fifty of his etchings at the National Museum in 1944, and an exhibition of his watercolors was mounted at the Grand Central Galleries in New York in 1950. Kleiber was a member of the Society of American Etchers and the California Society of Printmakers. He received a silver medal in 1931 from the Printmakers Society of California for his print, Leaving the High Country...
