About the Item
This piece is a restrike from around 1973 of the original lithograph printed in 1966, produced as a two-pass, five-color offset lithograph. There has been some debate over whether Chagall personally approved this reproduction, as official documentation of his direct involvement is uncertain. However, the use of the original plates suggests that there may have been an agreement between the artist and the publisher, allowing for its creation.
The original painting for "The Magic Flute" was commissioned for the opera’s new home at Lincoln Center, with Chagall designing the iconic set and costumes.
