About the Item

"Love is a god, my children…(M.532)" is one of twelve lithographs that Marc Chagall created for the portfolio "In the Land of the Gods" from 1967. The title refers to writings by Longus with the full text as, "Love is a god, my children. He is young, beautiful and winged; that is why he delights in youth, seeks beauty and ravishes souls, having greater power than Jupiter himself." The art has an image size of 17 x 13" and framed dimensions of 32.75 x 28". From the edition of 145, signed lower right 'Marc Chagall' and numbered lower left XV/XX on japon nacre (there were also 75 numbered in Arabic; 25 numbered epreuve d'artiste and 25 lettered A to Y). Framed in a custom, closed-corner, white gold frame. Mourlot, F. & Sorlier, C. The Lithographs of Chagall III, 1962-1968. Boston Book and Art Shop, Inc., 1969. p. 145, no. 532. In the Land of the Gods – essay by Robert Marteau “In truth Chagall has always lived in that Greece where the stuff of the universe has no seam, and where humanity is human just because it participates in the divine, and in each act proves that this is so. Moreover Greece teaches us that the essential act is poetic, allowing image, metaphor and myth, not to interpret nature, but everlastingly to renew creation so that we live in a perpetual revelation. When Chagall turns to Greece, he is turning to life itself : I mean that for him it is not dead matter which he wishes to bring to life again, but rather, as it were, the living flesh of dreams and memories. It is just the same when he treats the fables and history of the Old Testament. In common with all the great creators whom we dare call poets, he proves himself co-eternal with the living unity of the world. Whether it be at war, at work, at the hunt, at a feast or at a marriage, the gods he has summoned are there. Sappho too lets us into the secret : I know well that here below it is never possible to attain the fulfillment of desire; but for us mortals it is better to give thanks for the share granted us, and not to forget it. Such blessing is at the core of Chagall’s splendor, and it is that which he renews with all the warmth, strength and joy peculiar to his nature. Chagall makes the dance of divine powers actual and visible; he tells us that the world of men has not been left abandoned, that it is not a wandering ball of no significance in the vastness of creation, but has its share in the grace abounding everywhere. He sees and sings of things that for others are not there; in this way he stirs our sense of wonder and enchantment, for the knows that, for those who are not blind, wonder is truth.” (Mourlot, F. & Sorlier, C. The Lithographs of Chagall III, 1962-1968. Boston Book and Art Shop, Inc., 1969. p. 142.)
