About

Marie Therese Vacossin Geometric Composition Medium: Colour Silkscreen Year: 1979 Signed, dated, titled, numbered or inscribed Edition: 10 Size: 8.2 × 8.2 on 14.0 × 13.3 inches Marie-Thérèse Vacossin is a French painter known for her logical and geometric paintings. Despite their mathematical appearance, these works are primarily related to her sensory experiences. On her canvases Marie-Thérèse Vacossin manages to depict vibrating forms using bands of color that create an almost illusory effect on the viewer. Born in 1929, Marie-Thérèse Vacossin studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris from 1947 to 1949 and then the École du Louvre from 1948 to 1950. The artist moved to Basel, Switzerland in 1956 where she founded Atelier-Editions Fanal alongside Marcel Mazar in 1966. Emphasizing the traditional technique of engraving and silkscreening, the publishing house has supported the career of François Morellet and Carlos Cruz-Diez amongst others.Primarily aligned with the concept of Art Construit, Atelier-Editions Fanal combines geometric rigor with the observation of the everyday. Solo exhibitions of Marie-Thérèse Vacossin’s work have been held at Galerie Oniris in Rennes, Galerie La Ligne in Zürich and the Gallery of Modern Art in Basel. Her work has been included in exhibitions held at Künstlerforum in Bonn and is held in Allianz’s art collection in Berlin. Throughout her career, Marie-Thérèse Vacossin’s has remained closely aligned with the Op Art movement but has resisted being called an outright Op Artist.
