About the Item

This elegant and richly detailed original poster, created circa 1950 by the renowned French marine painter Marin-Marie, pays tribute to one of the most celebrated ocean liners of the 20th century—the SS Île de France. Commissioned by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, also known as the French Line, the poster captures the ship slicing through the open Atlantic, exuding both grace and power. The Île de France, launched in 1926, was an icon of French luxury and design. Known for its lavish Art Deco interiors and impeccable service, it symbolized the golden age of transatlantic travel, ferrying celebrities, diplomats, and jet-setters between Europe and America. During WWII, she served as a troopship and was later refitted for peacetime crossings, regaining her status as one of the most beloved vessels of her time. Marin-Marie’s illustration is a masterclass in maritime portraiture. The twin red-and-black funnels rise proudly against a dramatic sky, while the ship’s hull cuts confidently through the stylized waves. His attention to nautical realism and atmospheric detail places the viewer directly in the scene—one can almost feel the wind and salt in the air.
