It is hand signed, dated, titled and numbered from the limited edition of 13 - but each is a unique variant. Frame included: Measurements: Frame: 27.75 x 22.5 x 2 inches Artwork: 23.5 x 18 inches Catalogue Raisonne: K. Tyler Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1974-1985, New York: Abbeville Press, 1987. p. 289. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition. About Alan Shields: Alan Shields (b. 1944, Herington, KS; d. 2005, Shelter Island, NY) created unique, imaginative, and theatrical structures using unconventional materials and vibrant color. His three-dimensional paintings convey a playful, deconstructive impulse through the incorporation of un-stretched hand-dyed canvas, rope, yarn, beads, and wood. Shields moved to New York City in 1968, where he showed with Paula Cooper...

Summer Yards - Playful Abstract Print in Blue Gray Navy Mid Mod Inspired
Located in Morgan Hill, CA
"Summer Yards" is an abstract contemporary monoprint by Texas artist Roberta E. Laine. In this one-of-a-kind print, layers of mulberry papers have been run through an etching press with hand-cut and found stencils. The papers have then been collaged together to create a playful, dynamic composition with a richly textured surface. The background of this print is a off-white while the layers printed on top are robins egg blue, navy, white, and gray. For more works by Roberta E. Laine and new listings, follow our storefront at Colibri Gallery. The artist writes, "The images that I create are a result of experimentation and play. I work intuitively and make aesthetic decisions using formal properties including point of emphasis, balance, movement, and unity. I am influenced by objects that most people might discard. Intricate folds and patterns that are created by product packaging are intriguing. I unfold every box with thoughts of image potential. The flattened packages are used to create shaped templates which I ink and run through a printing press onto paper. Plywood and grocery produce bags are used to create background textures. If you look closely you may recognize some from your own shopping experience. Vinyl lettering leftovers may appear as cryptic text or aerial street views. Printing onto translucent paper allows me to layer and build depth while summoning imaginary images for the viewer to translate." Laine is a full-time artist who grew up in the Midwest and now calls Fort Worth, Texas her home. As a child, she was fortunate to have a mother who provided countless art supplies and who was also undaunted by the messes and half-finished projects that would sometimes be left behind when Laine would decide to go in a new direction. Laine was certain that she wanted to pursue a career in art in spite of her 1st Grade teacher, Mrs. Poulette, who gave her a C- for coloring outside the lines...
