Literature: Sécession. L’Art Graphique à Vienne autour de 1900, Musée-Galerie de la Seita, Paris 1999, vgl. Kat.-Nr. 17.
Exhibitions: Neue Gallery, Museum for German and Austrian Art 2017.
Provenance: Collection of Serge Sabarsky, New York; Private collection, Illinois.
Maximillian (Max) Kurzweil studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Christian Griepenkerl and Leopold Carl Müller, followed by the Académie Julian in Paris from 1892, where he exhibited his first painting at the Salon in 1894. He was co-founder of the Vienna Secession in 1897, and was the editor and illustrator of the influential Secessionist magazine Ver Sacrum (Sacred Spring). Kurzweil was also a professor at the Frauenkunstschule, a Viennese academy for female artists. In 1905, he was awarded the first ever Villa Romana prize, which is now the oldest German art award.
As a consequence of private circumstances, made worse by his innate sense of melancholy, he committed suicide in 1916 together with his student and lover, Helene Heger. Despite his relatively short career, Kurzweil belongs to the most significant representatives of the Viennese Secessionist movement, along with Gustav Klimt and Kolomon Moser.

"Laderlappen" Original Lithograph Poster by Walter Schnackenberg
By Walter Schnackenberg
Located in Chicago, IL
Printed by Oscar Consee, Munich, 1922
Not much is known about this Stockholm-based cabaret act. Translating literally as Bat Man, we see a young dancer tease an oversized bat wearing a monocle -- a truly bizarre but beautiful design. (text by Jack Rennert)
Walter Schnackenberg’s style changed several times during his long and successful career. Having studied in Munich, the artist traveled often to Paris where he fell under the spell of the Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s colorful and sensuous posters depicting theatrical and decadent subjects. Schnackenberg became a regular contributor of similar compositions to the German magazines Jugend and Simplicissimus before devoting himself to the design of stage scenery...
