Plis de manipulation Rennert & Weill, n°15, variante 2 (sur 5). Très belle épreuve sur vélin, imprimée en 8 couleurs et encre d’or chez F. Champenois, à Paris. Signée dans la composition en bas à droite. Tirage sur fond lavande de l’édition courante, vers 1899. Cadre d’époque. Entre 1895 et 1916, la marque de papier à cigarette JOB effectue plus de trente commandes auprès d’artistes, pour des calendriers, cartes postales et affiches. Cette vaste campagne publicitaire s’adresse non seulement aux consommateurs masculins, mais aussi aux jeunes femmes de la bonne société, qui adoptent massivement la cigarette en signe de modernité. L’industriel entend faire appel aux meilleurs illustrateurs du temps : Jules Chéret, Georges Rochegrosse, Firmin Bouisset, Charles Léandre, Georges Meunier, Armand Rassenfosse, Jane Atché, etc. Entre 1896 et 1898, Alfons Mucha, que le grand public a découvert grâce à Sarah Bernhardt, livre deux affiches célèbres pour JOB. La première, que nous présentons ici, suffit à résumer son style, puissamment décoratif, en même temps que son idéal féminin : des traits graciles et rêveurs, que noient les volutes d’une abondante chevelure, une silhouette mondaine au cerne impeccable, des couleurs douces et ténues, rehaussées de tons d’or à la préciosité byzantine. La fortune de cette affiche fut immédiate, ainsi qu’en attestent les différentes variantes de couleurs, formats, supports et lettrages. Une édition de luxe fut tirée sur satin (Rennert & Weill n°15, variante 1), et l’édition courante imprimée sur fond pourpre ou lavande. La composition fut par ailleurs déclinée en plus petits formats (cartes postales, plaquette publicitaire rigide pour magasin), et dans plusieurs langues (R. & W. n°15, v. 4 : version trilingue, en grec, français et arabe ; R&W, v. 5 : légende en espagnol).
