“I’m interested in the experience of translating digital imagery into material, substantive objects via traditional, hands-on media and processes. Variation (white/oak), Nos. 1 & 2, began as digital images, but came to life as prints, taking advantage of lithography’s methodologies and the beautiful, saturated, transparent nature of ink on paper.
When working on the computer, I move from the extremes of chaotic excess to versions that are more refined, with a sense of stillness that enters in at some point. I seek the elusive moment at which the work appears to hold a truce between motion/chaos/excess and stillness/control/restraint. Though my compositions begin on the computer, the transformation to physicality and materiality is paramount.”

Amy Ellingson
Amy Ellingson’s work has been exhibited nationally and in Tokyo, Japan. She is the recipient of the Fleishhacker Foundation Eureka Fellowship and the Artadia Grant to Individual Artists and has been awarded fellowships at MacDowell, the Ucross Foundation, and the Civitella Ranieri Foundation. Recent group exhibitions include Open Ended: Painting and Sculpture Since 1900 at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Unfamiliar Again: Contemporary Women Abstractionists at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University. Ellingson’s work is held in various public collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Crocker Art Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum of California, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, and the US Embassies in Algeria and Tunisia. She received a B.A. in Studio Art from Scripps College and an M.F.A. from CalArts. Her public commission, Untitled (Large Variation), is an 1100 square foot ceramic mosaic mural. It is a permanent installation on view in Terminal 3 at the San Francisco International Airport. Ellingson was Associate Professor of Art at the San Francisco Art Institute from 2000 to 2011 and has served on the Board of Directors at Root Division, a San Francisco nonprofit arts organization, since 2011. A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, she currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I was excited with the discovery of forms that evolved to compose a cohesive composition, feeling as if under the shade of an old oak to me.
About the Artist
Sheila Grabarsky is known for her bold, gestural nature scenes. Her fluid paintings have been compared to those of Vasily Kandinsky, the Russian painter and art theorist referred to as the father of abstraction. And, like Kandinsky, the essence of inner beauty and the potency of the human spirit are key factors in her art. Sheila's art carries an air of spontaneity, however, the work develops in many layers and takes a long time to come together. "I search for evolving forms within the composition, look for 'eye flow' and use my color intuition," she explains. "This is the mystery I love about abstraction - always evolving and birthing itself." Sheila draws energy and inspiration from living near water, and says she rarely travels because she does not like to be away from painting. In her studio, she is usually accompanied by three animal friends and an eclectic playlist of Janis Joplin, blues, reggae and classical. In 2016, Sheila's art was featured in the movie American Pastoral, starring Ewan McGregor and Dakota Fanning.
