CLAUDE PARADIN (c1510-1573)
Take Away the Pricks of Pleasure

About the Item

CLAUDE PARADIN (c1510-1573) Devises Heroiques et Emblemes Woodcut. Paris, 1614. The emblem has played an important role throughout history. Found on every manner of personal item, from cape to coach, it has served to dignify its bearer. From the embroidery of emblems in the fabric of palaces robes and banners to the engraving on shields, silver and armor, incorporating an emblem was done to distinguish the possessions of the aristocracy. We have found a similar use for them today; it is known as ‘branding’. Claude Paradin produced one of the finest emblematic works ever created. Published first in 1551, it was to be edited and expanded for over 70 years. While French was Paradin’s mother tongue, he also produced a Latin translation to reach a broader reading public. Due to this widening popularity, there were also both a Dutch translation published in Antwerp, 1563, and an English translation published in London, 1591. The 1614 Paris edition has a Latin banner and a French text explaining its significance and/or universally applicable lesson; thus making Paradin’s work at once informative and somewhat moralistic. Although it has been over 400 years since their first use, the original woodblocks from which these illustrations were printed have survived to this day and can be found in the Plantin Moretus Museum, Antwerp.

Hand-Painted Gold Highlights. To produce a study for an historic illumination of antiphonals, the Arundel Society selected each of the alphabet letters from chorale books created in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Devotional pieces, the chorale music was greatly appreciated by Christians throughout the world. Often it was sung as responsive music where the choir would be divided into two parts thus creating a harmony which reinforced the Christian religious doctrine. As illustrious as the music, the key letters that headed each piece would take their own place in the art world. Many initials would be specifically devoted to prominent men and woman of both religious and cultural importance. For example, the “F” was devoted to Fra Angelico, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists...
