About the Item
This brilliant original poster by David Klein, created around 1960, captures the spirit of postwar jet-age travel with vibrant flair. Commissioned by TWA (Trans World Airlines) to promote its flights to London, it forms part of Klein’s celebrated series for the airline, which remains a high point of mid-century modern travel advertising.
Klein's composition celebrates London’s iconic architecture—from the Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster (Big Ben) to the intricate facade of Westminster Abbey and Nelson’s Column. A TWA jetliner soars above the city, symbolizing speed, modernity, and global reach. The vivid, layered color palette and bold typeface channel the energy and optimism of the 1960s.
Widely admired for his artistic contribution to commercial aviation, David Klein elevated airline posters into works of collectible art. His ability to distill the essence of a city into a graphic masterpiece makes this poster a standout piece of mid-century design and a timeless homage to London.
Perfect for collectors of aviation memorabilia, modernist design, and vintage travel ephemera, this poster is as dynamic today as it was at the dawn of the Jet Age.

David Klein
David Klein was an immensely prolific travel posterist who worked primarily for TWA and produced dozens of posters for the now-defunct global carrier. He designed several different series for TWA, ranging from early work that was realistic to later work that was cartoon-like in style. David Klein was born in El Paso, Texas in February of 1918. He moved to California where he attended the Art Center School [later renamed the Art Center College of Design] in Los Angeles. During the 1930s, he was an active member of the California Watercolor Society. This group of artists often chose to paint watercolors depicting scenes of everyday life in the cities and suburbs of California. They painted directly with little or no preliminary pencil drawings and used paper as a ‘color’ in a new and creative way.

Step into a vivid dream of Iberian flair with this striking circa 1960 original travel poster by David Klein, created for Trans World Airlines (TWA). Designed at the height of the Jet Age, this artwork invites viewers to fly across the Atlantic and immerse themselves in the timeless traditions and spectacle of Spain.
Rendered in Klein’s unmistakable style—bold, graphic, and saturated with color—the poster is anchored by the imposing figure of a matador, resplendent in an elaborately embroidered traje de luces (suit of lights). His stoic expression, the gleaming detail of his costume, and the dramatic composition place the viewer right on the threshold of the bullring. In the background, another matador stands poised beneath the arches of a sunlit plaza de toros, while a stylized jetliner leaves a clean, modern contrail in the crimson sky above—signaling the future soaring above the heritage of the past.
With its juxtaposition of tradition and modernity, this poster captures both the romance of Old Spain and the excitement of international travel in the mid-20th century. The golden Gothic script of “Spain” contrasts with the jet-age boldness of the “Fly TWA” lettering, creating a visual rhythm that reflects the era’s enthusiasm for cultural discovery through air travel.
