Elise Wagner
Elise Wagner painter, printmaker, and teacher, is a recent recipient of the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Originally from Jersey City, New Jersey, Elise relocated to Portland, Oregon over 30 years ago. Her initial captivation with the geology, and the majestic beauty of the Pacific Northwest, lead her to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree at Portland State University. She studied geology, physics and environmental biology with the intention of weaving them into what would become the fabric of her work. Elise was also awarded a residency at Vermont Studio Center. Making the Pacific Northwest her home base has continually nurtured her lifelong creative pursuit of merging art with science. Artist Statement: My work is inspired by and evolves alongside new developments made in astronomy, physics and the environment. I approach each painting as if I am laying down a map to an unknown destination and have always been intrigued by how we define our sense of place by way of cartography and architecture. My aim is to translate visually through the use of color, line, texture and light." About the Process: Encaustic collagraph "monoprints" can be created using various mark making techniques such as dry point etching directly into the plate and through the wax texture making it possible to use the plate again and again (up to at many as 20 pulls) varying the colors for small editions. The plate can also be enhanced, changed or completely re-created after making one unique print from it, this would be considered a "monotype" (one type). Typical tools for building the encaustic collagraph plate are ceramic incising and scraping tools. Heated tools, such as a tacking iron and a heated wax writer are recommended. With this method, fusing the wax is optional and not necessary.

- Royal Palm With Turkish DesignBy David Smith-HarrisonLocated in Palm Springs, CASigned, titled artist proof. Edition of 135. Royal Palm with Turkish Design maintains the interplay between the twodimensionality of the architectural rendering and the modeled line work of the palm. The addition of a subtle fade of sky-like blue in the upper left-hand corner works with the atmospheric marks to further emphasize the illusion of volume in the palm. Conversely, by bordering the upper half of the print with a pattern from an early Ottoman brocade, Smith-Harrison reminds us that we are not to take a representation of three dimensions as realism. The small medallion in the lower center of the print, although it also is taken from an Ottoman brocade, doubles as an architectural element. The shape resembles the glyph-like mark used to represent a palm tree in plan view drawings. The ornate, curvilinear large medallion is the third of the Ottoman elements. Placed in the lower left of the print, both the shape and the etching in deep reds and blues create an allusion to a polychrome roundel. Both the shape and the placement provide balance to the colonnade and the angular rendering in the center of the right side of the print. David Smith-Harrison studied at Utah State University and served as studio assistant to Adrian Van Stuchelen and Moishe Smith. In 1983 he traveled in Europe and studied at the Art and Design Faculty of South Glamorgan Institute in Cardiff, Wales. Before leaving for Europe, Smith-Harrison began an intense professional association as a studio assistant to artist Trevor Southey. Smith-Harrison’s imagery is distinctive for its meticulous and studied execution and rigorous, demanding craftsmanship. The results are generally rich in subtle articulations and poetic spirit. His work is located in private collection in Japan, Taiwan, Republic of China, Spain and the United States.
