Original vintage travel advertising poster: Fly to Japan by BOAC featuring a colourful scenic view by the notable British painter and illustrator Frank Wootton (1911-1998) of a Japanese temple pagoda and people in traditional Asian clothing and kimono dresses, some holding sun umbrellas, walking behind a rickshaw man looking out towards the viewer in the foreground with a plane flying between the trees overhead, the stylised text in red above and in white below. (The British Overseas Airways Corporation / B.O.A.C. was the British state airline created in 1940-1946 as the result of a merger, introducing the world's first passenger jets to its service in 1952 and merging again in 1971-1974 to create British Airways / BA.) Very good condition, backed on linen.

Frank Wootton
Studied at Eastbourne College of Art under Eric Ravilious, Wootton (sometimes misspelled Wooton) was a painter of a range of subjects, including landscapes and equestrian subjects, as well as the aviation images that he is best known for. The Canadian Museum of Flight described Frank Wootton as ‘The Dean of Aviation Art’. With a highly realistic style, Wootton took ‘great trouble’ to search for ‘technical and historical accuracy’. He was assigned as an official artist to the Royal Canadian Air Force and also painted designs for the RAF. He experienced firsthand the aircraft, pilots, ground crews, skyscrapers, and landscapes of the Second World War. A pioneer in ‘aviation art’, his work can be found in museums in Canada, Australia, the UK, and the United States. Frank Wootton was also an extraordinary landscape and equestrian artist. His love of horses was unparalleled and he became vice-president of the Society of Equestrian Artists.
