'L'Agaric Couleuvre'
A French copper-line engravings with original printed colouring of mushrooms by Jean Baptiste Francois Buillard (1742-1793).
From Bulliard's 'Histoire des Champignons de la France', a series of engravings describing the mushrooms of France, published in Paris in 1791. This series of engravings are 'probably the first botanical work completely colour-printed without retouching by hand' (Great Flower Books, 1990, p83).
Bulliard was a French physician and botanist. He contributed to the spreading and consolidation of botanical terminology and the Linne system. He was especially important in the area of mycology.
