'Japanese Woodblock Print', By Unknown, Color Woodblock Print on Paper

About the Item

This 21.25" x 37.5" framed Japanese woodblock print, depicts a busy scene that includes many figures within, and upon a large boat. The boat takes up the majority of the horizontal composition, with only a little of the background visible on the left hand side of the work. The background includes a small strip of land with figures walking on after disembarking from their boats. The figures appear to get off of the boats and onto land in a uniform manner, single filed, making the observer question the context behind the scene at hand and what could be occurring. The large boat holds 14 female figures while the top of the boat holds 5 male figures, presumably rowers for the boat as they each hold a long rod that appears to be in motion by the way the male figures are positioned and holding the poles. The figures, both male and female, are dressed in what looks to be very traditional Japanese garments and accessories. The work overall exudes traditional artistic Japanese styles, specifically reminiscent of the Ukiyo-e genre that flourished from the 17th to 19th centuries-- especially the meticulous detailing and bold colors-- which demonstrate the artistic precision of the Ukiyo-e style and that era. The color palette of this artwork is primarily composed of muted tones, creating a serene and calm effect. Specifically used are various shades of blues, earthy browns, reds and white. Overall, the color palette is harmonious and balanced and enhances the visual appeal of the artwork. The painting is matted and framed in a black wooden frame and is under glass. The artist is unknown.
